Variable Rate Seeding in corn enhancing yield stability

This year I’m looking forward to planting grain corn after being unable to seed winter wheat last autumn. As my goal is to stabilize yields and ensure a more uniform crop, which will simplify the harvest in late summer/early autumn, I consulted xarvio FIELD MANAGER.

Preparing to grow grain corn for the year

This year, I’m looking forward to planting grain corn after being unable to seed winter wheat last autumn. One of my fields has shown heterogeneous yields across different zones over the years.

xarvio FIELD MANAGER's Yield Potential Maps offered new insights and inspired me to try Variable Rate Seeding for the first time. My goal is to stabilize yields and ensure a more uniform crop, which will simplify the harvest in late summer/early autumn.

Step 1: Creating the seeding task

Step 1: Creating the seeding task

I started by creating the seeding task in xarvio FIELD MANAGER and streamlined the field zones from 5 to 3 with ease.

Step 2: Comparing seeding methods

Step 2: Comparing seeding methods

To evaluate the benefits of Variable Rate Seeding compared to Flat Rate Seeding, I set up a zone for flat seeding. After the season, I plan to compare the yields using a field zone-specific yield map provided by my contractor during harvest.

Step 3: Defining seeding rates for each zone

Step 3: Defining seeding rates for each zone

Consulting with my advisor, I set seeding rates of 75,000, 95,000, and 115,000 seeds/ha for each zone.

Step 4: Finalizing and sending the map

Step 4: Finalizing and sending the map

After a final review, I saved the seeding map and quickly sent it to my contractor.

Step 5: Seeding begins

Step 5: Seeding begins

My contractor received the map and uploaded it to the tractor's terminal. The driver promptly began seeding.

Outcome: Quick and easy process

Outcome: Quick and easy process

Creating the map, including all adjustments, took about 10 minutes. Coordinating with my contractor and transferring the maps was swift and straightforward, making the entire process much simpler than anticipated.

I am looking forward to seeing the results of Variable Rate Seeding!
